Fake check warning
Why Did a Recruiter Send Me a Check?
A recruiter may claim the check is for equipment, software, training, supplies, or a home office setup. In many job scams, the check appears to clear at first and then bounces later, leaving the job seeker responsible for money spent or sent away.
Why this is risky
- The bank may make funds available before the check is truly verified.
- The recruiter may ask you to buy from a fake vendor.
- You may be told to send leftover money back.
- If the check bounces, you can owe the bank.
What to do before depositing
Contact the company through official channels and ask whether the check is real. If you already deposited it, contact your bank immediately and do not spend the money.
